Here is the link to a short video about ongoing impact of this study- Tuskegee StudyLinks to an external site. • You will first summarize the events surrounding the trial (what happened, for how long, what are the current consequences). • Then you will reflect on the following questions: o What are the ethical concerns with this study? o Would the Tuskegee Study been possible without cultural understandings of race? o Are there other marginalized populations today that may be targeted in research? o Today we have laws protecting experiment participants, but do you think unethical research is still conducted? The Tuskegee Syphilis Study took place in Macon County, in Alabama in the year 1932 to 1972. Before the study was conducted, there was no cure for Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease, and it has adverse effects on the victim if it remains uncured. Therefore, The study used 600 men suffering from latent Syphilis in the survey. They hoped to get free medication since the medical research was being conducted by medical practitioners from the United States Public Health Service (Rosenthal, 2020). Unfortunately, these groups of individuals were taken to be treated for bad blood. They were instead given aspirin and mineral supplements, although Penicillin was the recommended medication for the disease in 1974.
